Gotika se ne svodi samo na arhitekturu već na psihu - likovi su poput starih portreta: lepi, ali izobličeni ako ih gledaš predugo. Univerzitet u kom se radnja odvija deluje više kao ukleti zamak nego moderna institucija, a njegovi zidovi pamte stvari koje bi bolje bilo zaboraviti.U svetu maglovitih hodnika, mramornih stepeništa i senki koje šapuću, Enigma se doima poput poglavlja iz davno izgubljenog rukopisa Edgara Alana Poa samo što ovaj rukopis diše modernim nemirima i neizvesnostima.
